Posted by admin On January - 25 - 2010

English Beat and GFUcrew join togetherGFUCrew.com, Bellyup Tavern and the English Beat join together to raise money for Haiti’s Earthquake victims. Come down and join us for a rocking good time on Feb-06, 2010.

Mike and I were just at The Belly Up having a meeting about The English Beat concert Feb 6th with an awesome Specials cover band opening up. There was at least another truck load of clothes that had been dropped of last night. At this time the Belly Up would like us to stop having donations dropped off as they don’t have the space hold it all. We did a great job and now will need help sorting it all.

“Hand Me Downs for Haiti” Clothing Relief Effort

Posted by admin On January - 15 - 2010

GFU RandandCoast.com article

Good Friends United has partnered with House of Blues and Belly Up Tavern to bring clothing to the men, women, and children of Haiti.

Countless buildings are in shambles and despair is everywhere in earthquake-devastated Haiti. Residents sit and wait for help as thousands of bodies remain missing and others lie lifeless in the street. After watching heartbreaking images from this quake-stricken land, local San Diegans Lydell Fleming and Michael Tostado felt the need to take action. Their solution: Hand Me Downs For Haiti.

“We knew that medical supplies and 44,000 pounds of pre-packaged food supplies were already being sent through global organizations and that millions of dollars have been raised via text message campaigns, and even the Jolie-Pitts have stepped up with a monetary contribution. We want to do something more; something we know will have a direct and positive impact on the men, women, and children of Haiti in need of basic necessities such as clothing and shoes,” says Tostado.

Partnering with community businesses House of Blues and Belly Up Tavern, Tostado and Fleming are hoping the community will come out this weekend with gently-used clothing for all ages as well as closed-toe shoes. With the temperature in Haiti being quite warm, donations of coats and sweaters are not encouraged.

Drop off locations include:

House of Blues San Diego (Friday, January 15 to Sunday, January 17 during retail hours. 1055 Fifth Avenue, San Diego, CA 92101. (619/525-1966) Anyone who brings in a clothing donation will receive 25 percent off any retail purchase.

Belly Up Tavern (1-9pm Friday, January 15 to Tuesday, January 19)
143 South Cedros Avenue, Solana Beach, CA 92075. (858/481-8140)

All items will be collected from drop off locations and given to a grassroots organization mobilizing efforts to get the clothing directly to the Haitian people. For Fleming, it is about helping what he calls our global family. “I know we have needs here in our own backyard. But we are a global community. We are one world and there is a dire need right now for everyone to pull together and contribute.”

Free Pizza For The Homeless

Posted by admin On January - 1 - 2010

GFU Organizers
Good Friends United, a social and business networking group that does online marketing and social media campaigns, kicks off its Start The New Year Off Giving Back campaign on January 1. The idea behind the campaign, say organizers Lydell Fleming and Michael Tostado, is to enable San Diego businesses to reach out and help others in the community. In this case, that something will be food for the homeless and needy.
Fleming, cofounder and promoter of Good Friends United, says his company provides social media marketing and promotion to businesses, but only those interested in not only their own profits, but also in giving back to the greater community.

“If a business isn’t giving back to the community in some way, shape or form, we’re more apt not to do business with them” says Fleming. “We have turned down clients that have no philanthropy component. From the get-go, that’s what our business plan has been. We want to serve clients that have the same mindset as we do.”

In keeping with that spirit, Good Friends United has teamed up with Rossi Pizza in San Marcos. On January 1, the restaurant will donate pizzas and breadsticks, which will be given out to any needy or homeless San Diegan who shows up. The giveaway will take place downtown (corner of 13th Avenue and K Street) from noon until 1 p.m.

Tostado, cofounder and director of social networking at Good Friends United, says the event is being promoted largely online through Facebook and other social media, including blogging. Ahead of the event, Fleming, Tostado and a team of others will go down into the area and hand out flyers to the homeless. The location is in the middle of a fairly dense population of homeless people, says Tostado, so participation is expected to be good.

The two men hope that this event is the start of a “giving back” event that will occur on the first of each month this year.

“We are hoping that it will expand beyond pizza, to different kinds of restaurants donating food once a month,” says Tostado. They are now seeking out other restaurants willing to participate.
Michelle Renee, a spokesperson for Good Friends United, says those businesses that give back to the community “are often the most successful ones.” Her public relations firm, Common Unity, operates with the same mission as Good Friends United—representing clients that believe in philanthropy and organizing events aimed at raising awareness or funds for a specific need within the community.
“Even within an organization, if you are giving back to your employees, for example, you see increased loyalty and pride,” says Renee. “It brings your business to another level, creates a sense of unity within the business and with the greater community.”

Tostado and Fleming hope to add support for breast cancer and ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease) research to the list of causes their company will support, and they are working with Renee to organize an event to benefit Children’s Hospital—the Rock To Stop Violence concert on May 19 at House of Blues downtown. The event is aimed at raising funds to assist women and girls who have suffered violence and abuse.
